King’s College School Bus – New Routes Expressions of Interest
Help Us Build the Next King’s College School Bus Routes
Kiwi Coaches is investigating additional dedicated school bus services to and from King’s College in Auckland, based directly on demand from King’s families.
We already operate a school service serving the Point Chevalier / Ponsonby corridor to King’s College, and we are now looking at where the next services should operate.
Rather than deciding on fixed routes before speaking to families, we want to hear from parents and caregivers across Auckland.
If enough King’s students are travelling from the same area, we can investigate building a route around them.
We are particularly interested in demand from:
North Shore
Henderson, Massey and West Auckland
Mt Albert and Central/South-Central Auckland
Howick and East Auckland
South Auckland
These are starting points only.
If you live somewhere else, register anyway.
A strong cluster of families in another part of Auckland could become a route of its own.
Already Operating a King’s College School Service
This is not a completely new concept for Kiwi Coaches.
We already operate a dedicated school service for King’s College families travelling from the Point Chevalier / Ponsonby area, giving students a direct private transport option to school.
We are now investigating whether similar services can be established in other parts of Auckland.
Our objective is simple:
Safe, reliable, student-focused transport that makes the school day easier for both students and parents.

At this stage, we are gathering expressions of interest only.
There is no payment and registering does not commit your family to using a service.
We want to know:
What suburb your student travels from
Their approximate location
Whether they need morning, afternoon or return travel
Which days of the week they require transport
How far you would reasonably travel to a central pickup point
Whether other King’s families nearby may also be interested
We will then map the responses and identify where there are sufficient clusters of students to create practical routes.
Potential King’s College School Bus Routes
The routes below are indicative corridors only.
They are deliberately flexible because the final route needs to reflect where King’s College families actually live.
Stops could be added, removed or altered according to demand.
Option One: North Shore → King’s College
We are investigating demand for a dedicated King’s College service from the North Shore.
Depending on registrations, potential areas could include:
Albany / East Coast Bays / Takapuna / Glenfield / Birkenhead / Northcote → King’s College
There are several possible ways to build this service.
For example, demand across the East Coast Bays may justify a different route from demand around Glenfield, Birkenhead and the lower North Shore.
Rather than creating an unnecessarily long journey trying to cover the entire Shore with one bus, we will use registrations to determine where the strongest groups of students are located.
Central pickup points would then be selected to keep the journey as direct and efficient as possible.
Option Two: Henderson / Massey / West Auckland → King’s College
We would like to hear from King’s families across West Auckland, particularly around:
Henderson → Massey → Westgate / Lincoln Road area → King’s College
The exact corridor would depend heavily on where students are located.
If sufficient demand exists, stops could be positioned at safe and convenient community locations rather than requiring the service to follow existing public bus routes.
This could provide West Auckland families with a much simpler school journey and avoid students needing to make multiple public transport connections.
Option Three: Mt Albert / Central Auckland → King’s College
Another corridor we are investigating is Mt Albert and the central/south-central Auckland area.
Potential areas could include:
Mt Albert → Mt Roskill / Three Kings → Royal Oak / Onehunga → King’s College
The actual route would be designed around registrations.
Depending on demand, this may become one service or could potentially connect with students travelling from another nearby corridor.
The focus would be on keeping the route efficient rather than attempting to stop at every suburb.
Option Four: Howick / East Auckland → King’s College
We are also interested in hearing from families throughout East Auckland.
Potential areas could include:
Howick → Botany → Pakuranga / East Auckland → King’s College
A dedicated student service could provide an alternative to public transport journeys requiring transfers or significant waiting time.
Again, the exact route would be determined by where King’s families register from.
Option Five: South Auckland → King’s College
We are also open to establishing a service from further south if there is sufficient demand.
Potential areas could include:
Papakura → Takanini → Manurewa → King’s College
We recognise that rail can already provide a useful public transport option for some King’s College students travelling from South Auckland.
A Kiwi Coaches service would not be intended simply to duplicate public transport.
It would offer a different type of journey.
For some families, the advantages of a dedicated school service may include:
A students-only environment
A guaranteed place on the service
No general public passengers

Passenger accountability
Fewer transfers
Pickup points designed specifically around participating families
A familiar driver and regular group of students

Whether a South Auckland service is viable will ultimately depend on what families tell us.

What Makes a Private School Bus Different?
Public transport plays an important role in Auckland, but a dedicated school service provides a different experience.
A Kiwi Coaches school bus is designed specifically around the students using it.
Students Only
The service is for registered school passengers.
It is not a general public bus where members of the public can board throughout the journey.
A Guaranteed Seat
Services are capacity controlled.
Students enrolled on the service have a place available rather than relying on available capacity on a public route.
Live Bus Tracking
Our vehicles can be tracked in real time, allowing families to see where their bus is and reducing uncertainty around pickup times or Auckland traffic delays.
Passenger Tag-On and Tag-Off
Passenger accountability systems can allow parents and caregivers to know when students have boarded and left the service.
Direct Communication
If Auckland traffic, an incident or another disruption affects a service, Kiwi Coaches can communicate directly with families and, where appropriate, the school.
Regular Drivers
Wherever operationally possible, we keep drivers assigned to regular school routes.
This means students become familiar with their driver, and drivers become familiar with the students and families travelling on their service.
Routes Built Around Families
We are not required to simply copy an existing public transport route.
Safe central pickup points can be selected based on where participating students actually live.
That might mean using a suitable public bus stop, but it could also mean a safe location outside a community facility, shopping centre or another practical meeting point.
The objective is to create a route that works for the families using it.

School transport is a major part of what Kiwi Coaches does.
Our school services can include:

Police-vetted drivers
Appropriate passenger-service licensing
GPS vehicle tracking
Passenger tag-on and tag-off systems

We understand that parents are not simply buying a bus ride.
You are trusting someone else to get your child safely to and from school every day.
That responsibility sits at the centre of how we operate our school services.
How Much Would a King’s College Bus Cost?
These would be privately funded school services, rather than Auckland Transport or Ministry of Education subsidised routes.
That means a route needs sufficient participating students to cover its operating cost.
Generally, around 25–30 students can make a service viable, although smaller services can sometimes operate at a higher price per student.
Higher participation generally gives us more flexibility around both price and pass options.
As an indicative guide, Kiwi Coaches school term passes on routes of this nature are generally in the region of approximately $480–$650 per term, depending on:
Route distance
Travel time
Number of students
Vehicle required
Morning and afternoon demand
Number of operating days
Pickup locations
This is not a confirmed fare for the proposed King’s College routes.
Once we know where families are travelling from, we can build a realistic route and provide interested families with the proposed stops, timetable and price before anyone is asked to commit.
How Will We Choose the New Routes?
We will look at all expressions of interest together.
The biggest factors will be:
How many students register
Where those students live
Whether there is a clear geographic cluster
Safe pickup and drop-off locations
Auckland peak-hour traffic
Expected travel time
School start and finish times
Vehicle capacity
Morning versus afternoon demand
Operating cost
The resulting cost to families
Whether we can operate the service reliably every school day
The route with the most registrations is not automatically the first route we will establish.
For example, 30 students concentrated around Henderson may create a much more practical route than 40 students spread across the entire North Shore.
Location matters as much as the total number of registrations.
What Happens After I Register?
Once we have received enough expressions of interest, Kiwi Coaches will:
Map the general locations of interested King’s College families.
Identify clusters of students.
Investigate practical route corridors.
Identify safe central pickup points.
Estimate morning and afternoon journey times.
Select an appropriate vehicle.
Calculate an indicative term price.
Send the proposed route to interested families.
You will then be able to see the proposed:
Route → Stops → Timetable → Price
before deciding whether you would like to formally enrol your student.

If enough King’s families register from another part of Auckland, we can investigate that area too.
Could the proposed routes change?
Absolutely.
They almost certainly will.
This page gives us starting corridors, but the purpose of gathering registrations is to design routes around actual demand rather than guessing where students live.
Will it be door-to-door?
Normally, no.
We generally prefer a limited number of safe central pickup points.
This prevents a 45-minute bus journey becoming a 90-minute journey because the vehicle is diverting down individual residential streets.
Families will be asked how far they could reasonably travel to reach a pickup point.
Can my child travel only in the mornings?
Tell us what you need when registering.
Depending on the number of passengers and available capacity, we may be able to offer morning-only, afternoon-only, part-week or full-service passes.
The options available will depend on the final economics of each route.
Why would I use the bus from South Auckland when there is a train?
For some families, the train may remain the best option.
Others may prefer a dedicated students-only service with a regular driver, controlled passenger list, direct communication, tracking and a journey designed specifically around King’s College students.
We want families to decide which option suits them.
If there is sufficient demand for a private service from South Auckland, we will investigate it.
Will parents be able to track the bus?
Kiwi Coaches operates GPS vehicle-tracking systems, and parent-access arrangements can be incorporated into the final service model.
Does registering mean I have to pay?
No.
This is an expression of interest only.
No payment is required.
If we identify a viable service, registered families will be sent the proposed route, pickup points, timetable and price before formal enrolment.
